Christian H. Cutler

the Sprouts
Christian H. Cutler received his M.F.A. in photography in 2006 from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, where he also assisted the registrar and preparator of the Cranbrook Art Museum. He earned his B.A. in 1997 from Sewanee: The University of the South in Sewanee, TN and attended the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, Scotland in 1995.

Christian has served as Director of Galleries for Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX; Director's Assistant for The Sir Elton John Photography Collection; and Co-Director and Registrar for Jackson Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta, GA. He has also owned an art installation business.

Christian's interests and experience are multifaceted.  In addition to his work as a gallery administrator, Christian taught introductory- and advanced-level traditional photography courses for high school and adult community classes.  He also has led archival art preservation and presentation seminars, and seminars on portfolio preparation for artists.

Additionally, Christian is a practicing artist whose work has shown internationally and is a part of the Sir Elton John Photography Collection. When he and his wife, Sarah, are not chasing after their twin toddler boys, Christian enjoys riding and restoring vintage Vespa motor scooters, mountain biking, and working in the studio.

News

2012 is starting out well.  On February 1 I will start at the University of Central Missouri as the Director of Galleries.  The family and I are thrilled about this new position and about moving to Warrensburg, MO.  With Kansas City only 60 miles away, we'll be close to contemporary art museums, amazing food, and countless opportunities to enjoy culture and the arts.

September / October, 2011:  Austin Heights Baptist Church has asked me to redesign their website.  I will be restructuring the site and updating it's look as a volunteer designer.  Austin Heights Baptist Church has a lot to offer Nacogdoches and East Texas.  Their website should therefore offer a lot too.  I look forward to helping them make that happen!

On July 29, 2011, I attended a disaster preparedness seminar at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and sponsored by Heritage Preservation's Alliance for Response.  Organized by Galveston Historical Foundation, the attendees included 300 museum, archive and library professionals from 10 Houston-area counties.  The seminar was well orchestrated and offered insight from numerous private and federal organizations.  I took the most away from the FEMA discussion about federal relief guidelines and information about filing damage claims for museums and non-profits.

I was the juror for the Livingston Art League Spring Art Show in March of 2010.  Open to professional and nonprofessional artists of all ages, this competition featured the works of painters, collage artists, photographers, sculptors, fine metal artists, glass artists, and artists working in pen, ink charcoal, pastel and pencil.  (Please click here for a PDF of the thank you card from the Livingston Art League.)

"Naco Verde," the brainchild of Nacogdoches, Texas, artist Wally Knight, opened Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at the SFA Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.  The exhibition included works by approximately 20 artists from Nacogdoches, Lufkin and Louisiana who submitted pieces consisting of at least 75 percent reused materials.  A multi-media sculpture I created was selected for the show.  The exhibition ran through Jan. 29, 2011.

The "YOU'VE GOT MAIL PROJECT: a project promoting the art of correspondence" opened Jan. 22, 2011, at Austin's Flatbed Press Gallery and ran through Jan. 27, 2011.  Flatbed Press is located at 2832 East MLK Blvd., Austin, Texas,  78702.  The exhibit was curated by Carl McQeary of Austin.  Flatbed Press and Gallery is committed to exhibiting and making available to collectors contemporary art of the highest caliber. They specialize in original prints, paintings, photographs, drawings and mixed-media works.  My photography based postcard was one of the 700 pieces selected for this show.
